A temperature map of Europe
- First working version
- 2 h
Goal
A map that paints the temperature across Europe at its real resolution and shows at a glance which areas stay below the maximum or minimum you pick.
How it works
First the user picks a maximum or minimum temperature. That is the only decision to make, and the map answers straight away by marking which parts of Europe stay below it.
Underneath is the ICON-EU temperature field painted cell by cell at its real resolution, around 7 km, rather than a pretty interpolation between capital cities.
To finish, clicking anywhere brings up that point’s full forecast, so you can go from the overall view to a specific place without leaving the page.

Worth knowing
- dependency
Open-Meteo is free but capped at 600 equivalent calls a minute. The full field is requested in small chunks with staggered retries; ask for it all at once and the source cuts you off, leaving the map half drawn.
- cost
The proxy cache is what keeps this free. Without it every visit rebuilds the whole field, and a handful of simultaneous visitors is enough to exhaust the quota.
